Lesson 3: Method of Creative Thinking

What I learned in class:
Logical mind maps ---> able to persuade people
1.taking notes
2.research
3.generating main ideas

*sample of creative mind mapping --> Tony Buzan

-Focus on root idea and then branch it out.

Method of creative thinking:-
Logical mind map
- directly connected to stereotypes
-comprises of solely stereotype words
-every word/images : directly related to the central subject through its link.

Associated mind map - able to generate random words, show link which seemingly have no connection.
stereotyped - stereotyping, stereotypes.

Rule of mind mapping: knowing your subject

-ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS

examples of creative mind maps:

goodyes and hellos

Why can't we get all the people together in the world that we really like and then just stay together? I guess that wouldn't work. Someone would leave. Someone always leaves and then we have to say good-bye. I hate good-byes. I know what I need. I need more hellos.

Ideas

Something I learnt in Media Production class :

How to generate ideas:

asking the question:

"WHAT IFs"

Asking the right questions.

"Do you love the idea?"
"Will your audience like the idea?"

There is no such thing is bad idea, but bad execution.

What we need.

I did not come for the lecture this week. But I manage to get some notes from my friends and by reading their blogs. I believe we learnt about:

Novelity,Creativity,Innovation and Invention

1. Creativity is something that is created to solve existing problem; some creation that is originally produced and has values.

2. Innovation is bringing new ideas or change. This needs a lot of research in order to come out with innovative ideas. It has to benobal

3. We need to have intelligence and wisdom to have all the four modalities in design field or even in life.

4. Creativity is achievable. It is not magic.

5. novelity is quality of being new. It exist in a subjective perspection.

I like the idea of creativity is achievable, it is not magic. I feel that creativity is everywhere. It's on how we achieve it and how we use this creativity.

Being innovative is very important as well. If the people before us were not innovative, we wouldn't have inventions like the telephone, electricity and many more. Who would have known that it's possible to create a machine that is able to connect to people who are million of miles away? It's being innovative that we can be creative in creating something different and new.

I feel that novelity, creativity, innovation and invention are all very important for us creative students and even for other people. As there are the many fundamentals in helping us to achieve our goals, and the possibility of creating something different and fresh.

Creativity

This week in class, we learnt about Creativity.
The objective of the class was to :

To identify and to define the meaning of the word creative and creativity

According to the slides lecture :

1. Only special talented people are creative.

2. Being creative is hard.

3. Problems are in our life to make it more difficult.

4. I am not creative.

5. Innovation is the domain of geniuses.

6. I have to have brand new ideas in order for me to be considered creative.

7. Brainstorming is hard work.

8. Only artists need to be creative.

9. Writer’s block is a greatest obstacle in the creative process.

10. Using structured creative techniques will hinder my ability to be creative.

Something that i learnt is :
The myth of creativity:
1.Only special people are creative.
It's quite true that some people think that only the "special ones" are talented. Like how

we have the perception that engineering students cannot be creative or have an artistic skills. But it's a wrong perception and can be considered a stereotype.

2. Creativity is hard.

I feel that it's hard. But if you set your mind, that you can be creative, then I think it's possible.

Creativity is an attitude, combine with effort; 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration- Thomas Edison

i like this quote. It's the effort of the person on how creative he wants to be.

3. Creativity is only for artist.

I personally feel that this is wrong. Because creativity is everyone. Being creative is somehow in us, as we are people of innovative skills and having the ability to think of something different. So I think it comes back to whether or not we want to be creative and think differently.

Characteristics of the creative personality:

1.Creative individuals have a great deal of energy, but they are also often quiet & at rest.
2.Creative individuals tend to be smart, yet also naive at the same time.
3.Creative individuals have a combination of playfulness and discipline, or responsibility and irresponsibility.
4.Creative individuals alternate between imagination and fantasy ant one end, and rooted sense of reality at the other.
5.Creative people seem to harbor opposite tendencies on the continuum between extroversion and introversion.
6.Creative individuals are also remarkable humble and proud at the same time.
7.Creative individuals to a certain extent escape rigid gender role stereotyping and have a tendency toward androgyny.
8.Generally, creative people are thought to be rebellious and independent.
9.Most creative persons are very passionate about their work, yet they can be extremely objective about it as well.
10.The openness and sensitivity of creative individuals often exposes them to suffering pain yet also a great deal of enjoyment.

So what is creativity?

An Ability

An Attitude

A Process

Source: http://www.virtualsalt.com/crebook1.htm

Creativity is an ability simply because..it's the ability to imagine and create something new.

Creative is an attitude simple because...it's the playing around of ideas and possibilities.

Creative is an process simply because... it's the process of generating ideas and refining old ideas.
